A 2 day Santorini elopement experience

Why elope in Santorini?

Greece was the first place I visited after graduating from university and it was such an incredible experience. My two friends and I were on a tight budget and stayed in Santorini for $10 a night. We didn’t have a car and we took public transport everywhere. We really got to know everything about Santorini.

When I came back 11 years later, I had so much fun revisiting some of my favourite places and exploring new corners of the island. There’s so much to love about Santorini beyond the top destinations like Oia and Fira. With a two-day elopement, you can create an incredible experience

Why Have a Two-Day Elopement?

A 2-day adventure elopement in Santorini, Greece, gives you the freedom to truly savour the experience without feeling rushed. Instead of cramming everything into a single day, you can take your time, explore different parts of the island, and enjoy a more relaxed, immersive celebration. This extra time also allows for a greater variety of backdrops, from romantic cliffside vistas to hidden coastal gems, ensuring that your wedding story unfolds like a beautifully curated film.

By spreading your elopement across two days, you also get to embrace both sunrise and sunset, two of the most stunning and cinematic times for photography in Santorini. The early morning light casts a soft glow over the island, while the evening sun sets the sky ablaze in breathtaking shades of pink and gold. It’s an opportunity to capture the full essence of Santorini—from its quiet, dreamy mornings to its vibrant, golden evenings.

Sunrise and Sunset Options

First of all, depending on your elopement day, summers in Greece can get hot and most businesses shut down during the day and open up again at night. Afternoons are the perfect time for siesta. So by splitting your day into sunrise and sunset, we get good lighting AND a great atmosphere for your elopement.

Sunrise: Mornings in Santorini are peaceful and serene, with the island just beginning to wake up. This is the best time to have intimate moments in the usually crowded streets of Oia or Fira, where the soft pastel colors of dawn create a dreamy, ethereal feel. If you want those iconic blue dome shots without hundreds of tourists in the background, sunrise is the perfect time.

Sunset: The golden hour in Santorini is legendary, with the sun dipping behind the caldera and painting the sky in fiery hues. While places like Oia Castle can get packed with tourists, there are plenty of more private spots where you can exchange vows with the most spectacular backdrop. Consider a secluded cliffside, a private villa terrace, or even a catamaran sailing into the sunset for an unforgettable end to your day.

Ideas for adventurous activities to include in your two-day Santorini elopement

A Santorini elopement isn’t just about stunning views, it’s also an opportunity to embrace adventure. Here are some incredible ways to add an adventurous touch to your two-day elopement:

  • Hike from Fira to Oia – This 10km trail offers breathtaking caldera views and hidden scenic spots along the way. Imagine stopping for private vows at a quiet lookout with the Aegean Sea stretching below you.
  • Sail around the caldera – Book a private catamaran tour to explore Santorini’s volcanic coastline, swim in hidden coves, and soak in the Palea Kameni hot springs.
  • Explore black and red sand beaches – Santorini is home to unique volcanic beaches, perfect for dramatic and moody portraits.
  • Horseback riding – A romantic way to explore one of the island’s most charming traditional villages.
  • Wine tasting at a cliffside vineyard – Celebrate with a glass of Assyrtiko wine at one of Santorini’s famous wineries, like Venetsanos or Santo Wines.

Navigating Crowds in Santorini Santorini’s beauty is no secret, and some of its most famous spots can be incredibly crowded, especially in peak season (June–September). If you want an intimate experience, careful planning is key.

  • Avoid the midday rush – The busiest times are between 10 AM and 5 PM, when cruise ship passengers flood the island. This makes early mornings and late evenings the best times for elopement photos.
  • Choose off-the-beaten-path locations – While Oia and Fira are iconic, villages like Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Akrotiri offer stunning views with fewer tourists.
  • Opt for a private venue – Booking a small villa or terrace overlooking the caldera can give you a more secluded and stress-free experience.

Why Choose a Two-Day Elopement Over a One-Day Elopement?

A two-day elopement gives you the luxury of time, allowing you to fully embrace the magic of Santorini without feeling rushed. Instead of squeezing your vows, portraits, and adventures into a single whirlwind day, you can slow down and savour every moment. And I mean, that’s the point of eloping at a gorgeous destination!

  • More variety in photos – You get both sunrise and sunset coverage, casual and wedding portraits, and diverse locations, from iconic whitewashed villages to secluded black sand beaches.
  • Less stress, more enjoyment – No need to cram everything into a tight schedule. You’ll have time to explore, relax, and actually enjoy the experience.
  • Avoid peak crowds – With two days, you can time your elopement around the best lighting and the least busy hours, making for a more intimate and stress-free experience.
  • Opportunity for adventure – With an extra day, you can add a unique experience, like a private boat tour, wine tasting, or a cliffside picnic with Aegean Sea views.

What Time of Year is Best to Elope in Santorini?

Santorini is breathtaking year-round, but certain seasons are better suited for an elopement, depending on the experience you're looking for.

Best months: April–June & September–October: Warm, pleasant weather without the intense summer heat.

  • Fewer tourists compared to peak summer months.
  • Golden sunsets and dreamy light for photos.
  • The winds are intense in Spring and Fall, which can be a vibe, but can also bring sand from the Sahara and give everything a hazy look

Summer (July–August): Santorini’s busiest and hottest time of year.

  • Popular spots can be overcrowded, making it trickier to find privacy.
  • Early morning and late evening elopements are ideal to avoid the heat and crowds.

Winter (November–March): Quieter and more intimate, but many businesses close for the season.

  • Cooler temperatures and occasional rain.
  • Ideal if you want a moody, off-season feel with a more local experience.

How Do We Get Legally Married in Greece?

If you want to legally get married in Santorini, the process requires some planning and paperwork. Many couples choose to handle the legalities in their home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Greece to keep things simple.

For a legal wedding in Greece, you’ll need a lot of official documents including passports, birth certificates, a certificate of no impediment to marriage, an Apostille stamp, among others. Oh, and it’s all got to be officially translated into Greek by a professional translator.

If this process feels overwhelming, hiring a local wedding planner can make things much smoother. However, a symbolic elopement gives you complete flexibility while keeping the romantic experience intact!

One thing to note, same-sex marriages were only just recently legally recognized in 2024.

How to Get Around Santorini

Santorini is a small island, but getting around efficiently requires some planning.

Rental Car – The best way to explore at your own pace. Roads are narrow, but having a car gives you access to secluded beaches and villages. Driving on the island is actually super easy, but sometimes Google can lead you astray.

ATV or Scooter – A fun option for adventurous couples, especially for zipping through villages and scenic coastal roads.

Private Transfers – Many hotels offer transfers, and hiring a private driver for a day can be stress-free and luxurious.

Taxis – Limited and often expensive. It's best to pre-book if you need one.

Public Buses – Budget-friendly, but they run on a schedule and can be crowded, especially in peak season.

For the best experience, renting a small car gives you freedom while avoiding the challenges of relying on taxis or buses.
